Slim and Antwan were sitting at Buffalo Wild Wings in the southeast suburb, Calumet City, with Tesha and Mya when Slim’s cell rang. He noticed the 301 area code and knew that it was Trish.
“Hello,” he answered. He wasn’t dry, but far from upbeat.
“Hey baby. How are you?” Trish asked. Slim could hear the nervousness in her voice the same nervousness she’s displayed every time she called.
“I’m fine, how are you and the baby?”
“He’s kicking and everything. I think it won’t be too long.” Mya and Tesha were laughing at something Antwan said and Trish could hear the feminine voices. That sent a shock through her body because she instantly thought Slim was out with someone.
“Um, are you busy? I can call back. I just wanted you to know I sent the hospital and doctor information to your email.”
Slim caught the change in her tone when his friends laughed, but he didn’t tell her who the voices belonged to. “Are you comfortable with the doctor?”
“Oh, um yeah. She’s been my cousin’s doctor for years. Everything is good.” She paused, hoping her silence would afford her the opportunity to hear the voices again.
Slim caught on and decided to speak. “The voices you hear are Trish and Mya’s.”
“Oh, you’re over to the house? Tell everyone I said hello.”
“Okay, but we’re not at the house. We’re at B-dubbs. Tesha wanted some of them damn Thai curry wings. She was going to go for the habanero wings, but Antwan talked her out of it, telling her the baby probably don’t want that hot shit.”
Tesha overheard Slim. “Who you talking to, telling my business?” she laughed.
“Trish.”
Excited, Tesha and Mya, in unison said, “Tell her hi.”
Tesha motioned with her hand. “Let me holla at her for a second.”
Slim handed her the phone.
“What’s up girl, you good? You’re not about to drop that baby yet, are you?” Tesha asked. Her voice was upbeat and one that Trish was happy to hear.
“Nope, not yet. I promise to call all of you when I go into labor.” Trish’s voice changed to one that was almost begging. “Please don’t think that I don’t want you all to be around when I have the baby. I just have to—”
“Girl, it’s all good, believe me. Give me a call tomorrow so we can talk. I know you’re missing my ass.” Tesha looked at Mya. “You want to holla?”
“Tell her I said hello and that I’ll call her later.”
Tesha did, then got off the phone. She handed it back to Slim.
“Hello.”
“I’m here.”
“You need anything? You straight?”
“I’m good. My cousin has been looking out. She also said to tell you hi and that she can’t wait to meet you.”
“I’m going to wire some money to her for putting you up. Get me the info tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry about that, baby. She’s good. She’s just happy that I’m here.”
Slim wasn’t trying to hear that. Even though Trish had left him for whatever reason, he wasn’t going to let his wife live off someone else, even if it is with a relative.
